Preserved in an 18th-century copy in the Bibliothèque Royale of Belgium (KBR, ms. 17349-60, fols. 13-23v), the Annales Maximiniani were published in 1881 by Georg Waitz in the MGH, as a continuation of the Chronicon universale – 741.
The edition poses problems, most notably in the relationships posited between the Annales Maximiniani and other contemporary historical sources. A compilation of various Carolingian texts, the Annales Maximiniani appear to be more original than has been thought. They are not simply the continuation of a chronicle, but rather an interesting early ninth-century attempt to insert into Bede’s Chronica Majora an account of the rise of the Pippinides and Carolingians, composed of carefully edited selections from a number of sources.
