Unique collections. A library with a long history.
The first inventory of the books belonging to the Ecole Royale des Chartes dates back to January 1847. It lists some ten titles for 39 volumes, coming from the former school and given to the library by Jacques-Joseph Champollion-Figeac, a professor of palaeography between 1830 and 1848. In May 1848, the library had 77 books and journals.
At the time of its move to the Sorbonne, the collection included 8,000 titles. Since then, the library’s collections have considerably increased and nowadays include 150,000 works. Some come from alumni donations: Charles Casati gave the library 70 works in 1880. This donation is made up of a selection of works produced by famous European printers and is used as an illustration in the History of Books course.
